My name is Terry Benn. I produce, mix, and master music in multiple genres, as well as compose music for TV and Film. I work from a retreated farmhouse studio located in rural Ontario. My ultimate goal is to produce an end product that propels the stories forward and makes the consumer, the artist, and director feel even more connected to the work.
Music Production Background
Like many, my pursuit of sound started with playing an instrument, (in my case guitar) which then evolved to performing and touring. When I lost my connection to performing live, I dove heavily into the world of music production and composition, as I still loved making music. It always drove me crazy that my music never sound the way I wanted it too, so my obsession began to finally get “that sound.” Starting with recording engineering, I ended up working through each stage of production in-depth and detail, all the way to mastering. I very much wanted the ability to finish a professional sounding track (start to finish), so I could understand every stage of the process. I spent years studying recordings I deemed of the highest quality, but more importantly the one’s that inspired me to create music myself. Since 2012, I have produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered the work of artists in many different genres, both locally, regionally, and internationally. Without going on too much about all the things I have accomplished, I invite you to check out my work on this site to get a scope of quality and genre versatility. Most of it has been mixed and mastered in-house.
Transition to Scoring for Picture
In 2015–2016 I was introduced to film scoring and scored 2 short films for a fellow friend and upcoming filmmaker. I was very connected to the process of working to picture, as it gave me many liberties of sound exploration that seemed to be limited in song based music. I found scoring to “fill a void” I didn’t even know I had. Luckily, many of the skills and tools I obtained in music production were directly useful for film and tv. In 2019, after working a long line of singles, EPs and LPs, I began working with (and co-operating the studio) my partner Michelle Osis
(established composer, pianist, and producer). I began providing additional music, guitar tracks, and mixing for multiple film and tv projects. I have recently rebuilt my space as hybrid production and composition studio, allowing me to swing easily between the two worlds. I can now create more organic and custom soundtracks using the recording studio, and follow up by delivering well produced, pre-mixed, quality sounding scores. Both directors and post mixing houses alike know the value of dropping in music that doesn’t need a pile of labour to sound great.
